H1N1, Sungai Buloh Hospital, throat swap

Chulet was hiding at home waiting out her 3 days..

The next day, Chulet’s baby sister (from henceforth names as bb-dragon)was on her way back from Melbourne. Unfortunately, bb-dragon was stopped at the KLIA airport as the thermal scanner picked up that was she was having fever and showing other symptoms of flu. She was requested to get herself checked for H1N1.

When she got home, all of us were very concern as bb-dragon has asthma history. So, after taking panadol, Chulet’s make the decision to bring her sis to the Hospital. After checking online, it was mentioned that some of the private hospital we could go to includes Subang Jaya medical centre, Pantai Medical, Sunway and Sime Darby. Chulet called the Sime Darby medical centre and they say that they are not ready to handle H1N1 cases yet. So, Chulet decided to go straight to Subang Medical Centre.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, the staff told us that they are still in the midst of applying to handle H1N1 cases. Chulet was annoyed. (It was on the newspaper !! meh..)

Anyway, since the staff were all so polite, chulet let it go..

We told to to go to Sungai Buloh Hospital or General Hospital.

Chulet suspect that there should be less people in Sungai Buloh hospital, considering that this hospital is like at out-of-no-where ! So, that was where we went.

Taking the NKVE heading towards Sungai Buloh, we took the exit where it say Sungai Buloh hospital. If I recall correctly, it should be a few exit after the Kota Damansara toll exit. Once you come out from the toll, the Hospital is right in front. Very hard to miss. They have banners all around the outside of the hospital pointing the H1N1 cases to the emergency entrance.

So, after parking the car, Chulet and bb-dragon went to the emergency entrance. Tents were setup for the patients showing symptoms of H1N1 outside.

H1N1 tent

We were told to take a seat beneath the tent and someone will come along to take our details. The hospital staff come and started asking us some questions and taking our temperature.

Luckily, there was sufficient fans, so, it was not really hot.. And since the tent was under a shaded area, it was not that bad either. While waiting, Chulet got thristy and ask the hospital staff if they have water. They are so nice and sweet. They quickly went to find some packed water and started distributing for us. :o) that was nice !!!

After taking our particulars, the hospital staff will study it and then some of the people will be given medication and ask to go home with some medication. Another batch will then proceed to another room. Chulet and BB-Dragon were asked to proceed to the other room.

It is called the Decontamination room. I am sure the ‘T’ was missing in this case.

This is where we wait for our turn to get our throat swapped. During the throat-swapped, the nice hospital staff told us that we will need to quarantine ourself for 2 days and wait for the results. During this time, we are to start taking medication which they will provide to us later.

Leaving the room, we waited for the medicine. After receiving them, we were told that we could go home. (It is FREE !)

I got a call from the hospital one day later to give us GOOD news. We are free from H1N1.

But, that doesn’t mean that we are not having flu.

What we are suffering is the common seasonal flu.. oh well…

boil coke, cough, flu, honey, redoxon, salted water, sore throat, steam face, vitamin C

Oink oink.. Chulet is sick.

It is so HOT !! and Hazy lately!! Spending a short time in the open air is such a torture. Chulet is suffering from a really bad sore throat and nose block after a short 30-minutes chat outside the office yesterday.

The sore throat got worst after dinner. Nose block was so bad that I had to breath throught my mouth which gets it dry and irritated my throat. Now, Chulet is coughing also. Sigh…

A few advice given to Chulet are such as:

1)      Drink more water

(Chulet : OO.. mummy say honey is good… so, all the water I take now is slightly honey-ed)

2)      Sipping warm salted water before and after sleep

(Chulet : Hate it but it seems to work really well, especially before sleeping)

3)      One dosage of Redoxon effervescent (Concentrated Vitamin C + zinc) every morning

(Chulet : YUMmm… fizzy orangy drink. I like !! can I have more? Will I get oversode?)

4)      Stay away from fried / oily / spicy food

(Chulet : Sobb sob.. Do I have to?)

5)      No COLD drinks / food

(Chulet : I’ll try ..T_T )

6)      Stay in-door

(Chulet : Yay..MC !! MC !!!  NO.. Bad Bad.. Chulet.. chulet must go to work. )

7)      Supposedly having capsicum juice helps.

(Chulet : Haven’t tried that – not sure if I want to try it)

8)      Boil coke with ginger and lemon

(Chulet found that this drink is quite a norm in Hong Kong)

9)      Covering face with towel over a bowl of steaming hot  water and breath. Helps to clear the block nose after 10 minutes and sooth the throat a little.

(Chulet tried and love this.. felt like a mini-just on the face-spa.. hehehhee)

10)  IF you are still suffering after 3 days. PLEASE GO SEE a doctor

 (Chulet : NOoooNo.. don’t want !! don’t take me there.. NOOnOOOO )

Pig Flu – H1N1

H1N1, Influenza A, Pig Flu, Swine Influenza Virus, Tamiflu, Virus

The whole world recently turn their focus to the new Influenza A virus, or also known as the Swine Influenza Virus (SIV). The first case of this virus actually happened in late March.  But, the whole thing is said to be under control and outbreak is wanning. Since there was no solid evidence that the virus was from pigs, Chulet is not even sure why everyone still call it Swine Flu… Currently, it is only confirmed that the virus is spreading from human-to-human type.

However, there are some experts who raise some concern that the ‘flu-season’ (Probably they mean winter – where flu is quite a common thing) is coming soon and they are worry the new virus might merge with the common flu to became a migthier virus. (Not really sure where I read it already… )

Chulet was very interested about this as she will need to travel to the States in June. Instead of worrying about it, the best thing to do is to keep myself educated about this virus.

Some of the interesting pointers Chulet got from online / newspapers / emails are

1) Remember to wash your hand with soap often and each time you should try to wash them for at least 20 seconds. Chulet’s bf made a valid comment about washing the TAP too. I mean, it will definitely defeat the purpose if your hands are clean but then you infected them again when you turn off the tap. (From some reports I read, it was mentioned that this virus can actually live outside the body on surfaces for up to 3 days)

2) Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze with tissues. Remember to dispose of the tissue properly after that. (Again – remember to wash your hand after that)

3) DON”T touch your face with your hands / fingers… (this means NO nose picking !! rubbing your eyes, biting on your nails ! and etc..)

4) Try not to touch at things in public places (bus station, train station, library, parks, playground and etc..)

5) Bring along alcohol hand sanitizer wherever you go. (And perhaps also baby wipes to clean the area a little before you sit or eat in public places)

6) Wear nose and mouth mask… (Never like this – make breathing really inconvinient)

7) SEE the doctor immediately if you are feeling feverish, having sore throat, runny nose, cough, muscle pain, severe headache, chill, nausea or if you are vomitting.

8) Might be a good idea to get 1 box of Tamiflu (only if you NEED to travel to countries with confirmed infected case). Try not to stockpile them as this will means that you are taking away medication supply from people who will really need it. 1 box of Tamiflu consists of 10 capsules, which you are suppose to take 2 times a day IF and IF you are showing signs of the influenza. Again, the medication should be taken at the early stage of the influenza to stop the progression of the virus.  Personally, I would recommend you to only take it IF you have no immediate access to clinic / hospital when you are experiencing the influenza symptoms.

Chulet pray that everyone will keep healthy and safe during these time.
