egg custard, Hainanese Kaya Butter toast, ipoh, Ipoh White Coffee, Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong

This shop it supposedly the FIRST shop to serve white coffee in town (beings in 1937). But then, so claims the other 2 shops next to and opposite too. I have actually been to the shop next door (during our last food crawl).

We ordered their white coffee and the egg custard. Personally, I think both are equally good. The thing I like about this shop is the coffee seems more aromatic but the consistency is slightly watery. The other shop is really thick (Kau) but a little too sweet for me. Both shop also serve the customary Hainanese Kaya Butter Toast Bread and half boil egg.

The egg custard was really good. It was well flavored and not too sweet. I love that it was served really cold and yet the texture is still very soft and smooth. Thumbs up indeed. If this it the second best, how I wish I had the chance to try the best. Oh well.. maybe next time.

chicken rice noodle, egg custard, ipoh, kai see hor fun, pork satay, Thean Chun

Yes, we are crazy. Right after that satisfying meal at restaurant Wong Koh Kee, mom marched right across and demand we have the famous Ipoh kai see hor fun. (sweat break)

It was around 1:30pm and the place was pack like mad. You see tons of people standing beside the table waiting (and giving pressure) for that table to finish and leave. It was scary.

Amazingly, we manage to secure a table and most of the stall owner here seems to know our friends. Yay !! for connections. Hehehee… we got served pretty quickly and the satay stall guy kept coming back to load us with FRESH hot batches. The pork satay was really good. The sauce was really nice but I would have prefer if it is thicker. That way, the sauce would clung onto the satay better.

We shared 2 bowls of the Ipoh hor fun between the 5 of us. Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to get any photo as my fingers were sticky from the tons of satay we wallop. (I think we ate about 60 sticks !!!).

Aside from the famous Ipoh Hor fun, this shop is also famous for their egg custard. Sadly, they ran out that day… NooOOOooo… (I was pining to sink my teeth into this famous egg custard since day 1 when she told me about it). But, all is well (in chulet’s world)… as I had the chance to try the next best egg custard in town.

Our friends raved about this restaurant from the first day we arrived in Ipoh. This restaurant is sort of hidden from the main street and I can understand why non-local would find it hard to locate. It’s located at Lorong Panglima or better known as Mistress Lane (Yi Lai Hong) by the locals. (Located opposite the 2 really famous shops, Restaurant Ipoh Kong Heng and Thean Chun)

From the outside, this restaurant looks like a typical ran down coffee shop which you can find in KL maybe 20 years back. Even the chairs reminds me of my childhood days when mom used to bring us to kopitiam in kepong for breakfast. I love it!!! The chef in this restaurant still uses charcoal and those huge cast iron woks.

Again we got there abit earlier than norm as we wanted to avoid crowd. So, we had lunch at 11:30am. Hahahaa…And again, there was quite a crowd there already.

The steam egg of 3 kinds (Chicken Egg, Duck Egg and Century Egg), was really good. The texture was tofu-smooth and I love the huge bite size chucks of century eggs. It’s also scattered with garlic oil which hub loves.

When the Stew Fish Head was served, I ‘ohh’ed and ‘ahh’ed over it for some time before digging it – also refusing to allow anyone near the dish while I was trying to capture some picture of it. Alas, I don’t think I even manage to do this dish any justice. The fish head was HUGE. And it was piled with heaps of vegetables. It was yummilicious !

The BEST dish here has to be the stir fry watercrest with roast pork. The vege was cooked just nice with plentiful crunch left in it without feeling too raw. I love the combine taste of roast pork with this leafy vege (which I normally see used in soup instead of stir-fry).

What a satisfying and fantastic lunch. I can’t wait to come back here again. Yumm yum.

Restaurant Wong Koh Kee,
3, Lorong Panglima, Ipoh
Open 10:30am – 3pm (closes once every three weeks)
