Today we decided to go to this restaurant called L’atelier by Cilantro. Now, now, I know what you’re thinking. Chu-mama / Chuletz posted about this restaurant 11 years ago, and here I am, apparently writing about the exact same thing. But this time, things will be different. Cilantro is a fine-dining restaurant that is typically very expensive. In 2023, Cilantro introduced L’atelier to serve typical French bistro food. Anyway, let me tell you about my time there.

When you walk in, you will be greeted by the friendly staff who will show you where to be seated and will also provide you the menu. You can choose from either a 2-course meal (Appetiser and Main) or a 3-course meal (Appetiser, Main, and Dessert). We went for the 3-course meal. There was a huge variety of food to eat in the menu! Foods such as the Moules Marinière (Mussels stewed in white wine) caught my interest. Here are some of the appetisers you can choose from:

We ordered the Tartare the Boef, Os à moèlle au four, Moules Marinière, and Terrine de foie gras. My favourite was the Moules Marinère. It had a satisfactory smell. When I bit into the mussel, it was very tender and flavourful. The mussel was a pleasing light orange colour. It was also very easy to peel open the mussel shell. Unfortunately, I do not have a photo of the dish as it was so good we forgot to take a photo of it. Oops 😅. The staff also give everyone complimentary 2 slices of bread and piece of butter that I liked as well . I had also went exploring and found out L’atelier has it’s own little drinking area / bar.

It was then the Tartare the boef was served. I ate it with some small crackers. The tatare was pink in colour and had a chewy texture. Raw Beef !!! The only bad thing about it is that the mustard is bit too overpowering. Besides that, it was a pretty good tartare.

The bone marrow as very… squishy. I personally didn’t really like it, but mama loved it. She especially liked dipping the bread into it and eating it. It has a rich flavour, no doubt, but I also find most bone marrow a bit too squishy for my taste.

The foie gras finally arrived. It was mushy (not my kind of food-texture), but when eaten with the jelly, it started to taste a little better. Overall, it was pretty decent with the crackers. The foie gras was a light brown beige colour. One of the things I liked about it is that it’s soft, so you can mash it with your tongue inside your mouth.

Main dish time!

For some reason I decided to order a cheese sandwich. Mama ordered fish. We also ordered some steak and mash potatoes. The cheese sandwich was warm and crispy. To my delight, there were slices of turkey ham inside, which were very tasty. The fish was a bit overcooked and the sauce was a too overpowering, but it was okay. The steak was good at first, juicy, warm red center, tender texture, but I got a bit bored of the taste and resumed devouring the cheese sandwich. The mash potatoes were really good though 😋. They were creamy and tasted very potatoe-y.

Finally! Dessert time: Chocolate mousse, Crème Brûlée, Brioche with apples (I did not try this), and Crepe Suzette with Grand Marnier & vanilla ice cream on the side (I did not eat this as mama told me that Grand Marnier is a type of alcohol). I was in dessert haven. Chocolate mousse had silky chocolate cream inside and little crunchy chocolate balls. Yum 🤤. Crème Brûlée was crispy and creamy at the same time and for some reason tasted a bit like chocolate.

I really enjoyed my time here at L’atelier. I would definitely come back here again. The food is decent and the ambience is rather peaceful. The staff are friendly and the views from the window are amazing.

Anthony Bourdain, Chicken sashimi moriawase, Japanese Restaurant, Minori, raw chicken, Royale Bintang Damansara, salmonella

The first time I found out about the possibility of eating raw chicken was when I watched Anthony Bourdain on the No Reservations program. Immediately, images of zombies tearing into human flesh popped into my mind. Truthfully, I was a bit grossed out. But, I kept trying to convince myself that it is not a big deal since I eat raw beef with no problem at all.

Fast forward years later, I can’t believe I actually bucked up my courage and took 2 slices. One slice is the tenderloin and the other is the thigh. Initially, when hubby pointed it out on the Minori spring menu, I unconsciously shook my head while hubby gleefully nods his head. (bleh…) I still think he was mocking me since I always pride myself to be an adventurous eater. Unfortunately, he managed to convince mum to give it a try. So, I was out voted. YES – I did try to remind them about salmonella and all sort of scary bacteria !!! But, hubby was very determined and had high confidence that the Minori chefs would be able to handle it properly.

When the waiter brought the dish over, he carefully explained to us the different portion of cuts and the condiments which goes with it. On top of that, he assured us that the chicken just arrived to their restaurant that morning and since we are having lunch, it’s very fresh. Another thing which he assured us was that if we decided not to continue eating it raw, they would be more than happy to send it back to kitchen to cook. Plus point indeed for them.

There were 3 cuts available, i.e. Thigh (with leek), Tenderloin (with onion) and Breast (with daikon). On top of that, there were also slices of heart, lung and liver/kidney (not sure). To be truthful, the tenderloin was pretty good for me. The texture was really good. Reminds me a lot of white fish sashimi. It was the thigh which ended it for me. At first I kind of like the chewy texture, but, as the raw chicken smell got stronger, I felt queasy.

Jidori Chicken Sashimi

Hubby and mum on the other hand were really enjoying it. They were happily chomping everything down and enjoying every bite. I felt like I was sitting next to TWO Hannibal Lecters !!! LOL

Anyway, I am proud to announce that I have at least tried this dish (which some claim is one of the most feared dishes out there). All 3 of us walk out feeling fine from this experience. Bravo to the Minori team for daring to bring this dish to Malaysia. It might be common in Japan, but, I don’t think it’s something which will be easily accepted by the consumers here.

Burger Junkyard – The Strand Kota Damansara, Malaysia

After a long day at work, I decided I need a good hearty meal to fill my growling tummy… But, hub and I were kind of unsure where we would like to eat and we were throwing the decision back and forth.

Then, I recalled my brother-in-law mentioning about this burger place in Kota Damansara and thought that perhaps it was a good night to give it a try. This restaurant is quite easy to locate if you are familiar with the Strand (Kota Damansara).

Thankfully, this area is pretty deserted at night and locating parking is a breeze. Afternoon crowd is CRAZY around this area and it’s near impossible to get a space. There’s probably 3 restaurants for every 5 shops in this area.

The place is air-conditioned !!! so, this means NO-smoking. Yay. After placing our order with the front counter,

The Burger Menu

we were presented with their unique order number – The Rat. It’s a black furry rat soft toy with a tag on it’s ear. Cute… but, I’m not so keen to touch that thing. LOL

The rat and lunch set

Our Rat waiting with us. The lunch set seems pretty decently priced. Our burger got served pretty quickly. I think we only waited about 15 mins.

Hub got the Buffalo Soldier. The chicken was really nice and juicy. I love that they are using the whole thigh instead of mince chicken / chicken breast. The sauce is a wee bit overpowering. I think I would have prefer some salad in it to give it another layer of taste and texture…But, it’s just me.

Buffalo Soldier

As for me, I can never resist when I see egg and pineapple on beef patty. Brooklyn for me !!! Look how awesome and tall this stack is. nom nom nom. I was salivating already when they placed it in front of me. Luckily, I had the willpower to take a snap before devouring it. (Some article claim that people who take picture of food have mental problem… WHAT?! how can that be true… Think of the willpower it takes to have the discipline to take the picture before chomping away…tsk tsk tsk)

Brooklyn Burger

Look at that !!! The greens are nice and crisp too… That’s hard to find. Most places I go serve burger with almost wilted dying salad leaves. This is beautiful. Awesome choice if I may say so myself. hehehe…

Did I mention that the fries are really good? Almost chips-like. And, I love how rustic the fries looks with the potato skin around the edges.

One of our friend decided to join us and she got a half size (90gm patty) Vampire Slayer. Basically, garlic garlic garlic. Vampire Slayer (Half)I think it’s ok. But, the garlic is overpowering the poor beef patty. Somehow I felt that the patty is the supporting star and the garlic stole the show. I would have added baby spinach on this baby. That might have bring back some balance and draw the palate back to the fresh sweetness of the beef patty.

Overall a good burger joint. Would definitely return to try some of their other burgers in the menu… perhaps the fromage et fungi ?!
