Baby Girl? Baby Boy? Do you want to know?

Anytime after week 16, the good doctor should be able to see the gender of your baby. Unless, the baby manages to maneuver into position and hides it from the scanner view. We have some friends who can’t find out until as late as week 30.

Around week 19 when I was due for a check-up, our doc manages to get a good scan. But, he’s careful to check if we would like to know or wait to be surprised. LOL…

I’m a control freak, so, OF COURSE I want to know!

Doc asked me if I prefer girl or boy… Immediately I told him GIRL please. ..quickly Follow by “I’m happy as long as the baby the healthy and safe”. When the Doc got the correct image, he ask if I can tell if baby is boy or girl? My answer was right, and come to think of it, it was pretty clear and it’s not hard for an amateur (first time mum) to tell.

He told us that nowadays many parents opt not to know. So, he has to be really careful even during routine scan… like the doc might just say, he / she is good. He/she is growing well…and etc. So, it’s really not so easy sometimes. Or, certain angle of the scan might just show you immediately the gender.

If you really want to keep it a surprise, a good idea would be to keep reminding your doctor, even during the normal routine check.

Once I find out the gender of our LO, I was happily shopping away. Hehehe…

Antenatal Class – Definitely for First time parents !

Hubby and I signed up for antenatal class upon recommendation by a friend. She told us that it would really help us to get ready especially since we are first time parents. I am really grateful for her advice.

I did not really do a lot of research on where to go for the antenatal class. Yes – I am lazy in some things. LOL. So, I just signed up with Tropicana Medical Centre since I’m going to give birth there too.

They charged about RM80/couple (or RM40/pax). The class includes breakfast, lunch and tea. So, don’t worry about going hungry. They should know better than to starve pregnant ladies. LOL… can you imagine trying to lecture a hall full of hungry pregnant women?!

Antenatal Workshop

I’m not sure what other Antenatal Class offers out there, but, this is what was offered in Tropicana. They gave talks on the following

  • Nutrition in Pregnancy – basically all about a pregnant ladies’ diet. We were given tips on what to eat and what not to eat (so much). What are some taboos and also opinion on supplements.
  • Having a baby – The Dr (Gynae) explain the whole process of getting pregnant, the week by week progress and also the test available. The things happening to the mummy’s body and etc. I really enjoy this lecture a lot !
  • Cord Blood Stem Cell (sponsors) – Very interesting to know since it’s quite new (in my opinion, any medical technology which is less than 20 years is still NEW)
  • Breastfeeding & Baby Care – Very informative but would have preferred if it’s more hands on. I did go back to Tropicana again for breastfeeding advice. The sister was really nice and helpful. (I’ll need to remind myself to do a post on my breastfeeding experience later)
  • The First few months – The Dr (Paed) go thru what parents should expect with their babies in the first few months. He also gave a brief talk on the vaccination required (I am a PRO-Vaccine mum)
  • Pre & Post Natal Exercises – This is conducted by a group of Physiotherapists and it was definitely great break after a long time of sitting down. We get to stand up and practice some exercises we can do during and after pregnancy.
  • Tour of Delivery & Labour Ward

So, if you are a first time parents, I’ll definitely encourage you to go. When is the best time to go? Many people advice that you should not go too early as you might forget everything by then. I actually attended the class when I was 21 weeks pregnant. Personally, I am grateful I attended the class around that time since I was feeling good at that stage of my pregnancy. I see some women attending was almost 8months pregnant, and I think it’s so tiring. But, it’s definitely up to you. If possible, DRAG your hubby along with you. 😉

Pregnant and Constipated

I never had constipation in my life. Hubby is usually the one who always complain about this problem… and, I never understand how hard is it to just “let it go”… until I got pregnant. (sob sob… Chinese has a saying, pin don’t prick you – you don’t know the pain)

I started having constipation beginning around my week 17th pregnancy. All the sudden, my bowel system is not working right anymore. It’s a torture to have constipation and pregnant at the same time. I know it’s silly, but, I’m scare if I push too hard, I might hurt my baby (ya ya… silly I know).

I read up on so many home remedy for constipation. Quite shock to find out that it’s a very common problem for pregnant women.

Usually when you have constipation, the western side will encourage you to increase fiber in your diet. And. the Chinese believes that it’s cause by your very heaty body (just be really careful if you plan to counter it with Chinese herbs… I don’t really encourage it for first time pregnant women as Chinese herbs react very differently with different people). I actually stayed away from all kinds of Chinese herbs until I was 5 months pregnant.

How did I counter this problem? I had a lot a lot of vegetable and fruits. Bear in mind not all fruits are good for you. You really need to take a bit and test it out. I love rock melons but while pregnant, I couldn’t handle rock melons (or any other melons come to think of it). I got so bloated and it hurts my stomach.

Some of the fruits that really helped are Dragon fruit (I prefer the red variety cause it’s sweeter), papaya (some people avoid it because they believe it will cause jaundice for the baby), avocado, apple, orange, mangoes (I love this when pregnant) and the best of all is the prunes. I prefer the del monte prunes, seems fatter and juicer compare to the other brands.

Prunes

The prunes are like the ultimate cure for me. Every time before a meal, I’ll consume 1-2 pieces of the prunes. If the constipation is really bad, I will make myself a cup of prune juice. Basically what I do is smash 4-5 pieces of prune in a cup of hot water, and drink it in the morning. This always does the trick. ;p Hope it can help you too.
