I love driving to Yarra Valley Dairy whenever I drop by Melbourne. Why?

Cheese !!! Of course. :p

Not to mention the fabulous scenic drive along the way. I love the amazing trees, off-road tracks and miles of beautiful vineyards scattered across this part of the countryside. The drive from Melbourne City to Yarra Valley Dairy probably only took us about an hour plus with one or two toilet breaks along the way. So, it makes a great day trip / road trip.

Be prepared to veer off the proper road into some really bumpy roads to get to the destination. Hub took a wrong turn unfortunately due to a ‘slight-error’ made by the navigator (me). But, thankfully – we got back right on track immediately because my friend who was supposedly trailing us took the right turn after seeing the sign board. LOL.Yarra Dairy TurnoffRight on Track

The shop has definitely expanded since my last trip there (maybe 4 years ago…). The dairy farm produces their own cheese and is mainly the fresh and soft varieties either from cow’s milk or goat’s milk.

We have Arrived !

Inside their cheese shop (which is the original 100 year old milking shed), the cheese tastings are complimentary. I think we tried about 6 -7 types of cheeses that day. ALL the cheese was really good (Personally, I prefer the cow’s milk ones). I was really in love with one of the cheeses and was tempted to get a tub back. Unfortunately, we still had some roads to cover and it’s not too good to leave the cheese without refrigeration for more than an hour or 2.

Cheese Selections for Dine-in Other Platters

So, the next option I have is to sit myself down and wallop the whole plate of cheese platter as compensation. Nom. Nom. Nom…

Aside from the cheese, there’s also quite a selection of desserts available. They have Ice-cream too !!! Personally, I think you should have at least ONE cheese platter if you are there. Come on… It’s a dairy ! ;p

Yummy desserts

What a beautiful rustic ambience to share an amazing cheese platter with friends and family, Chatting and chomping away. This is what life is about…Can’t wait till I’m back again.

DonDon …

Ahh… this place brings back great memories of my years in Melbourne. If I need some quick reasonably good japanese bento, this would be the only place I frequent. I love to take away the DonDon box and enjoy it in front of the State Library lawn on a good day.

So, last trip back was no different. The minute I touched down in Melbourne, I was dying to visit Don Don. I was shocked when I saw the shop closed when I was walking towards it along Swanston Street.

My heart dropped (sob sob…) and I reluctantly turn around. For some reason, I turned and looked down along Little Lonsdale and I saw this new big RED sign !!!

Don Don

I had hope… Have they moved? Is this the same DonDon?

I quickly drag hub along and we finally made our way into a much bigger shop (compared to their previous shop). After a quick scan at their menu, I was so excited to see that DonDon box is still available. Yay!!!

Now, let’s hope it still tastes the same. Look at the amount of food you get in the DonDon box. Hub got their teriyaki chicken curry rice. Which I think is ok. ME think the DonDon box is awesome. Love their sukiyaki beef. nom nom nom..

I am happy to report – it’s still the same. Definitely good value for your moolah. Yay ! DonDon – please don’t change. Arigato !!!

I walked pass this little restaurant many times in the past, but was never tempted to check it out. The bright red deco and outside frame of the restaurant felt a little too pub-like to me. Hence, I pre-judge this little guy and refuse to even look at their menu.

I’m so glad hub and I decided to give this restaurant a try this round. More like an interesting encounter which made us stop right in front of this restaurant, giving me the reason to scan thru their menu. I was instantly hooked. They serve quite a number of interesting traditional French / almost home cook type dishes.

The restaurant was pretty pack even at 6.45pm (which was relatively early for French to start dining). This is surely a good sign. The waitress speaks almost no English but luckily she is happy to help as much as she could and bear with my lousy French. LOL.

Hubby ordered escargot for starter to share. It was so delicious and I was so glad that it was a huge plate pack with escargots (I think there’s easily 2 dozens of escargots on that plate!). The sauce was absolutely fantastic and compliments the escargots really well.Escargot

For mains, hubby ordered duck. He loves the French way of cooking duck. This is the traditional Magret de Canard with apricot sauce. Simple common dish but done really well. The duck meat was pan-fried well, leaving it juicy and tender. It was a very generous portion plate fill with assortment of sides.

Canard à l'Orange As for me, I am in love with my Sole meunière. Such a simple dish of pan frying the sole with butter, and yet, the taste was anything but simple. The texture of the fish combine with the butter almost has a melt-like quality once in your mouth.

Sole meunièreEach bite is almost as amazing as the first, making me want to savor each bite slowly and making the meal last forever. Now, I truly understand why French takes 3-4 hours for dinner. When you have food this good, who would want their dinner to end?!

I would have loved to try their dessert. But, we were super full by then. I can’t wait to come back again to try their other dishes.
