Chee Cheung Fun, ipoh, Kafe Wah Nam, Popiah, Yong Tau Foo

Our first food-stop in Ipoh is kafe Wah Nam. We were really hungry and decided to head to somewhere close to where we were staying. It’s at the corner of Jalan Raja Ekram and Jalan Leong Sin Nam. (Opposite Foh San Restaurant – Dim Sum)

We reach the cafe at about 2:30pm and it is super pack with humans !!! I was a tad bit shock since most of lunch crowd would have dispersed by then (if we are in KL).

Good thing mom was pretty good at finding a spot for us to settle down. After that, we all ran different direction ordering food we want to try. So hungry !

We had popiah which was really good. The fillings are very nice and juicy but not wet. I hate wet popiahs. The only thing which I find interesting is thatIpohspread the sweet and spicy sauce all over the top of the popiah (interesting).

I ordered the Chee Cheung Fun and everyone agreed that it was fantastic. The texture is super smooth and has a really nice chewy consistency. The sauce was a bit sweet but it seems to compliment the rice noodle quite well.

We had it together with some Yong Tau Foo, which was also sold by the same stall. The way they make the beancurd skin yong tau foo was really interesting to me. Most of the time in KL, the skin wrap the meat fully. I find that this method actually taste better. Perhaps it is because some of the exposed meat is also fried which makes it more aromatic.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Fried Kueh Teow. It was quite good. But, the penang duck egg was better.

On top of what I’ve mentioned above, we also had the 3 bowls of ipoh hor fun (soup noodle –  was really really yummy too) and Chicken Rice between the 5 of us !!! It was really a great start to our ipoh food journey…

I can’t wait to try other food in 3 days that we will be staying in Ipoh.

Chinese New Year, ipoh, Road Trip

During this year Chinese New Year, we went for a little short trip to Ipoh (City in Perak, Malaysia which is about 120mins away from KL).

This city holds a great meaning for both of us (hub and me) as our love story sort of begins there. Mostly for me, since hub ‘wow’ed me while trying to court me by driving us to Ipoh just because I told him I had cravings for ipoh chicken hor fun. But then, like all boyfriend turn husband, they get lazier over time. Nowadays, I would be lucky to even get him to go for dinner together at a place 20-30 mins away… bleh.

So, when our family friends offered to bring us around Ipoh for good local food, I was game to go. Hub needed some urging but finally agreed when I reminded him how he had FORGOTTEN our anniversary and this will be sort of like our anniversary getaway.

And so begins our foodaventure in Ipoh. Stay Tune. 😉

Butter Kaya Toast, half boil egg, ipoh, Sun Yuan Foong, White Coffee

After a satisfying meal, what do we need now? Coffee, of course !!!

Since we are in Ipoh, it is only right we look for the best Ipoh white coffee. One of the members in this trip told us that this is the restaurant to go for white coffee. After hunting for it a bit, we finally located the Kedai Kopi Sun Yuan Foong along Jalan Bijih Timah. Supposely, this is the origin of White Coffee.

The smell of coffee being roast is so welcoming. We quickly found a seat and order our coffee. The coffee is served in a tall glass packed with ice. The first sip was kind of shocking for me as the coffee was super thick and sweet. But, after mixing the ice well, it was really nice. A tad too sweet for my liking. But, overall very good white coffee indeed.

And how can you have white coffee without the customary butter kaya toast and half boil eggs? Look at the thick sliced of bread. Yay!!! They use the Hainan bread which is so hard to find nowadays in KL. The egg was not bad but I think I would have preferred if they let it cook for another minute or two. This was a little too raw for my liking.

and hence, this concludes our Penang Ipoh 3 days food crawl mission. I think everyone of us parted really happy and satisfied. Not only was the food good. The company was great too.

It was fun and tiring at the same time!!!
