The only drawback of staying in Malaysia is the constant heat. Yesterday’s heat was terrible. I felt like I was melting even after shower. oo… how I miss winter !!! (A lot of people think I’m weird. But, I love COLD weather so much !!!)

And when I think of winter, I start missing Angelina’s hot chocolate! Thanks to my friend Jim & Jenn for introducing La Maison Angelina to me.

Now, whenever I am in Paris, I will definitely drop by to grab a cup of hot chocolate. (The restaurant is near the Tuileries Metro, along Rue de Rivoli) The place is super pack especially during lunch / tea time. So, it might be a good idea if you call in to make reservation. Personally, I am not a big fan of queues or making reservation (it’s never possible to know your time when you are on business trip)

So, what I normally do is just grab a cup to go. I enjoy sipping it slowly while taking a nice stroll in the garden, enjoying the view and cold air. Hub was not very impress with the hot chocolate, but, he really likes the mont-blanc pastry. (No picture – as he wallop the whole thing before I remember to snap…) It tasted chestnut-ish filled with cream in the centre. my turn to be not overly impressed. (hehehe)

aih… and now, I miss Paris too.

When macarons are mentioned, most of us would immediately think about a layer of ganache fillings sandwich between 2 almond meringues. This was not how macarons used to be. Today’s perception of macarons are actually influenced by Ladurée (pastry shop in France since 1862). Ladurée remains as one of the most established macarons makers and is recognize internationally. You should see the amount of tourist lining up to buy them !!!  

During one of my trip to Paris, I saw that the line in front of Ladurée was short and quickly took the decision to queue up for these scrumptious babies… it took about 30 minutes before I got to my turn (YES – even short queue takes 30mins). After selecting some of their popular flavors, I ran out of the shop gleefully and took my first bite. It was a disappointing experience for me. Perhaps it was my first time trying macarons and I had really high expectation or not knowing what to expect. It was extremely sweet to the point that I felt like I got sugar shocked or something. The following bites were with less enthusiasm.  So, that was the last time I bother with macarons. I think that was about 4 – 5 years back. 

This year, a good friend (Ms. J) asks if I could bring back some Ladurée for her to try. So, I told her I’ll try to make my best effort to make time (business trip = no time for shopping). Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to find the time.

But, when I come across Pierre Hermé’s shop and no queue, I ran in to buy 14 pieces. I know it was not what she wanted, but, I thought better than none. And, I did hear a lot of this chef, especially from some of my clients.

In the world of macarons, Pierre Hermé needs no further introduction. He was the youngest to be ever named theFrance’s Pastry Chef of the year and also the ONLY pastry chef to be awarded ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’. Interestingly, he didn’t start his first shop in France but in Japan. His first pastry boutique is in Tokyo on the year 2000. He only opens his first shop in Paris in 2002. The reason was supposedly due to his contract with Ladurée as he used to work there. I guess it’s only fair.

I knew it is not easy to carry these delicate pastry and they have the tenancy to get crushed or too moist over time. So, I was very careful to pack them in a Tupperware (YES – I carry Tupperware with me when I travel especially for business trip) and lo and behold ! I manage to bring back macarons which are still fresh looking and Not crushed !!! bear in mind that I bought it one day before I flight + afternoon flight the next day + 13 hours flight + one more day before I eat them = at least 64 hours. Amazing right?

 

I invited some close friends over to enjoy it together. By the end of the night, we manage to slowly polished off all these babies and M. Hermé convinced me to fall in love with macarons !!! Many people say he doesn’t stick to the original tradition and some of his flavours are too bold and quirky compared to Ladurée. But then, if you think about it, Ladurée also moved away from the original macaron to create what it is today. So, maybe it’s about time it got re-invented? 🙂

Bistro Romain (France)

I was pondering for some time before writing a post about this restaurant / bistro. The reason ? It’s a chain restaurant in France. So, it is sort of like blogging about McDonald’s or TGIF or Italiannies (Malaysia). But, it’s French!!! they do food so well…And, I do drop by Bistro Romain at least once every time I am in France. So… it’s only fair I write a post about it.  

Bistro Romain have about 14 or 15 chain within Paris itself and another 10 or so outside paris (the whole France). I think almost every major city in France (tourist area) has one Bistro Romain. But, the most frequented by tourists is the one located along the Champs-Élysées. (It’s even on lonely planet). If you like to get the address, you can google online and even find their menu and prices there. Quite good if you would like to know in advance what you are eating. ;p

Personally, the price is reasonable and the service is passable. Just don’t expect it to be value for money with top quality french services. It is a chain after all. But, if you wish to avoid slow service, the trick is to have dinner early and avoid the dinner crowd. When I say early, I meant somewhere around 6:45 – 7:15pm.  

To tell you the truth, the only thing which brings me back to this place time and time again is their beef carpaccio (thinly slice raw beef). It might not be the best I had, but, it is good enough. Not to mention, it is the most thinly sliced I have ever come across. I love the simple way it is prepared with some pesto sauce and olive oil served with wedges of lemon. You can add parmesan cheese and rocket salad if you want. But, I prefer it with some sprinkle of salt. That way, I can fully enjoy the freshness of the beef by itself. Another reason? It’s eat all you want !!!     

 

Foie Gras de canard serve with toast. (Duck Liver Pate style) Yum yum…

 

Tortelli cèpes et foie gras de canard (Tortelli with mushroom and duck liver). Definitely amazing on the first bite. But, you can only take so much of richness. One whole plate is just too heavy (in my opinion). But hub enjoys it all the way. Yes – he lick up the plate with the bread (how French. Hahahha).

 

Pavé de saumon rôti (Roast Salmon Steak) it’s ok. Nothing to rave about. The meat was cooked just right. Nice and moist. So many people tend to overcook salmon steak.

 

As for their dessert, it’s nothing to rave about. Most of the time, I’ll just go with their ice cream or classic tiramisu. But, hub wanted to try their tiramisu special of the day. For me, it was some tiramisu ‘wannabe’ with pear (fail).

Overall, it’s a nice restaurant. I usually like to sit upstairs by the window and look down the street. It’s very beautiful at night. And, if it gets too stuffy, I could sneakily open the window to allow some air in. ;p
