hot pot, Steamboat, sunway giza, tian xiang hui wei

Hot Pot is also known as Steamboat in Malaysia (and Singapore). The popular Japanese hot pot styles (Nabemono) are Sukiyaki and Shabu Shabu. It has some similarity to the French fondue or Bourguignonne.

Anyway, Tian Xiang Hui Wei is a chain started from Taiwan. I think they have branches in Japan also.

It is one of the few steamboat places which my family and I frequent. Why? It’s convenient to find a car park, it’s nicely air-conditioned, staffs are friendly, food is quite fresh and clean, soup base is good, and not to mention, they have some sort of promotion where we end up getting close to 40-50% discount (just on food not drinks).

The item I love most here is the Mongolian wrap. Yummz… (But at the price of RM20 – it does seems a little steep for 5 balls !)

And their slice beef is not bad too. Look at their meat selections !!! At least their order portion and the picture actually matches (btw, we had 2 portions on this plate…so, it looks alot more than the picture). Some place we go are really different. tsk tsk tsk…

They have variety of soup base for you to choose from… I normally just take the normal herbal type. The spicy soup is too much for me.

Be prepared to pay at least RM 400~500 (for 6 people). This place is not cheap if you are paying FULL price. They have voucher which you can purchase for lower price (hence the discounts we get). Just ask them about it and their staff will be able to explain to you.

Dig in !!!

It’s located in Sunway Giza (Kota Damansara). It’s on the 3rd floor of the shoplot. Below is Overtime.

Brinjal, Crispy Pork, Druken Prawn, Frog, Genting, Ginger, Gohtong Jaya, Lala, Reaturant Tak Kee, Soon Hock

The weather is so hot lately that I was half tempted to head to Gohtong Jaya just for lunch. You can enjoy relatively nice cooling breeze there as Gohtong Jaya is halfway up to Genting Highlands. Sometimes at night, it can go down to about 12~14 degree (especially when it rains). Tak Kee is one of hub’s and our friends’ favourite place to eat in Gohtong Jaya.

Crispy Pork in thick sauce. The pork is sliced thinly and fried until crispy. Then, stir fry with caramelized black sauce until it gives the pork a thin sticky layer. Yumzz… Usually, we (group of about 6 person) can easily finish 2 orders of this!!!

Stir Fry Brinjal (Aubergine) with dried prawns. This is my favourite. (salivating…)

Steam Soon Hock (Marbled Goby) with soya sauce. It’s very fresh because most of the Soon Hock in Genting is alive (i.e. swimming in the tank before being consumed). I heard that there’s a pond in Genting which rear this particular fish. The last time we had it (which is around end 2011) it was priced at about RM 120/kg. I think the fish we had was about 1.5 kg or slightly less than that.

Crispy frog with ginger. You would have thought the frog is the main dish here. But I think in this case, it is definitely the ginger. I love the way they manage to make the ginger so..so..sooo crispy that it felt like we were chewing into chips. This was the first time we tried this. Definitely yumzZz.. but we felt the poor frog was a little wasted to eat this way. Perhaps the next time, we should just order crispy ginger. Heehehee…

Lala (clam) in superior soup. The lala was really fresh and plump (It’s not the normal flat small type… kind of remind me of the Aussie’s pipi). Personally, I find this is the best way to prepare fresh lala. Any other way always seems to cover the fresh lala taste and you end up eating the sauce instead.

Claypot Druken Prawn in Glass Noodle. All time favourite whenever we are in Tak Kee. The prawns are always fresh and it really helps to heat up your body from the tons of wine and ginger they used. Lucky the weather is so nice and cooling there. I can’t imagine eating this somewhere hot. Probably sweat like mad.

Stir Fry Potato leaves. Normal dish. Nothing to rave about. But, feel the need to have at least one plate of green after all the ‘fatty’ food we eat.

Wow.. the 6 of us actually finish all these and double portion of the crispy pork somemore. Scary.

Dim Sum, Foh San, ipoh

Our friends told us that Foh San can get pretty crowded and advice us to reach there as early as possible. So, we actually woke up at 6am hoping to be the early worm. As we make our way to Foh San from our hotel, we saw scatters of groups  heading the same direction !!! oh my oh my… by the time we reach there, it was about 7am and the place was packed !!!

Hub and I actually have been to Foh San some time back. So, we were quite impressed by the newly renovated Foh San. Love the colors and high ceiling.

When we were waiting for a table, we noticed that one small group of people hogged a huge table. We asked is they mind sharing and to our shock, they mind !!! bleh. So, we patiently waited and search for a table. Finally, we manage to secure one…Yay !!! Eating time…

Unlike most Dim Sum place in KL, you actually have to line up to grab the dim sum you want. The lines are crazy. When fresh batch of dim sum comes up, it’s like everyone knows and dash there. When you see the line clear up, it means that there’s nothing much left in the steamer stall.

We manage to lay our hands on the typical dim sum like Siew Mai, Har Gau, Steam Fish Ball, Chee Cheung Fun (Prawn), lotus seed bun, and some other dumplings. Most of these are rather so-so. Not bad but not fantastic either.

I also had their Milk Custard and Mango Puding…

The best dish I had there was the Water Chestnut Cake / Jelly. When served, it was still hot. The sweetness was just right and I love love love the chewy texture. It’s really good.

We saw an elderly couple waiting for table and asked them if they wish to share our table with us. It was quite interesting as they told us many people don’t have sharing habits here. It was not a biggie for us and it doesn’t make sense since it’s not like the other party will eat your dim sum. Esh… We were glad we share our table as they share with us many interesting stories about Ipoh and juicy gossips. Hehehe… And they even share and insist we try the radish cake they ordered. (Good deeds are rewarded –ok !)

Overall it was an ok experience. Definitely worth trying but we were not really impressed. Maybe it’s because we are not quick on our feet and didn’t manage to grab any really interesting dim sum? Oh well – maybe in our next trip.
