It was a blessing that I get to spend Mother’s Day this year with mum. Normally we would find each other in different continent. So, for mother’s day this year, I decided to prepare my family an elaborate dinner.

Surprisingly, mum was more than happy to surrender her kitchen to me. Normally, it’s pretty hard to convince her to let me use her kitchen because she always say I make a huge mess and she need to clean it up after. LOL.

Being in Melbourne makes it easier for me to hunt for great and fresh ingredients (you can get almost anything from Vic Mart). I had some ideas what I would like to prepare for dinner but I was still playing around the menu in my head. I prefer to look what are the freshest products that morning before deciding the dishes I would like to prepare.

While in the deli section of Vic Mart, I saw a huge varieties of cheeses. It was amazing. After discussing with the lady boss, we finally settle on some locally made goat’s cheese. The texture was really smooth and creamy with a mild after taste. She also told me that it’s a good melting cheese.

So, ta-da… May I present, Goat’s cheese toasted on baguette. I marinated the cheese with some olive oil, sprinkle of salt and pepper, fresh thyme and tarragon, and drizzle with some honey lemon. The combination of taste was so really good.

Toasted bread with Goat CheeseFor Mains, I made cold basil beef and Magret de canard à l’orange (Duck in orange sauce). Nom nom nom… I am salivating looking at these pictures. LOL.

Cold basil beef

Magret de canard à l'orangeBoth mains are convenient as I can per-prepare in advance. That way, I can kick-back and relax before the dinner and not look like I have slave away in the kicthen the whole day. ;p The orange sauce turns out so beautiful. It’s the orange I tell you ! These babies are pack with real ‘orange’ smell and taste, unlike the oranges I get back in KL.

For sides, I made Pommes Anna (forgot to take picture of this one – must check if my sis took ’em)

Pommes Anna

and mum prepared Avocado Salad with toasted walnut and pine nut drizzled with light vinaigrette dressing.

Avocado Salad with toasted walnut and pine nut drizzle with light vinaigrette dressingWhat an awesome meal with great company. We end the meal with dessert. And, the best dessert is ice-cream. My beastie (Ms. SL) kindly brought over a tub of New Zealand ice cream which all of us just dig in from the box. hehehe.

ICE CREAM !!!

On top of that, we manage to get hold of some amazing bubbly during our trip to Yarra Valley a few days back from Yerring Estate and Domaine Chandon. Yummilicious !

DonDon …

Ahh… this place brings back great memories of my years in Melbourne. If I need some quick reasonably good japanese bento, this would be the only place I frequent. I love to take away the DonDon box and enjoy it in front of the State Library lawn on a good day.

So, last trip back was no different. The minute I touched down in Melbourne, I was dying to visit Don Don. I was shocked when I saw the shop closed when I was walking towards it along Swanston Street.

My heart dropped (sob sob…) and I reluctantly turn around. For some reason, I turned and looked down along Little Lonsdale and I saw this new big RED sign !!!

Don Don

I had hope… Have they moved? Is this the same DonDon?

I quickly drag hub along and we finally made our way into a much bigger shop (compared to their previous shop). After a quick scan at their menu, I was so excited to see that DonDon box is still available. Yay!!!

Now, let’s hope it still tastes the same. Look at the amount of food you get in the DonDon box. Hub got their teriyaki chicken curry rice. Which I think is ok. ME think the DonDon box is awesome. Love their sukiyaki beef. nom nom nom..

I am happy to report – it’s still the same. Definitely good value for your moolah. Yay ! DonDon – please don’t change. Arigato !!!

We were around semenyih area around lunch time after the Cheng beng festival. After driving along the main road searching for food, we finally settle on this little quaint restaurant. The name of the restaurant caught hub’s eye and I was quite curious. Seow Man Hot Soups

After settling down, we ordered from the short list of items from their menu. I think it’s a good tactic especially when you are a small restaurant. Better to focus on what you are really good at and also keep the inventory of perishable down.

Claypot white pepper soup with pork and chicken

I am a big fan of white pepper soup. So, I was delighted when they place it down in front of me. yumm… love it. Really tasty without it being too spicy from the pepper. Personally, I prefer the chicken over the pork for this style.

Claypot pork in chinese wine

We also had the claypot pork in chinese wine. This was really yummy and goes really well with rice. hehehe… hub’s favourite (of course ;p)

Sizzling tofu Omelette

The sizzling tofu was pretty good too. I love the omelette underneath the sizzling plate. Be careful to scrap it up as soon as the egg cook and not let it sit too long (or it will charcoaled).

It’s not bad… Price is pretty reasonable. If I am ever around Semenyih, I’ll probably drop by again.
