Chee Cheung Fun, ipoh, Kafe Wah Nam, Popiah, Yong Tau Foo

Our first food-stop in Ipoh is kafe Wah Nam. We were really hungry and decided to head to somewhere close to where we were staying. It’s at the corner of Jalan Raja Ekram and Jalan Leong Sin Nam. (Opposite Foh San Restaurant – Dim Sum)

We reach the cafe at about 2:30pm and it is super pack with humans !!! I was a tad bit shock since most of lunch crowd would have dispersed by then (if we are in KL).

Good thing mom was pretty good at finding a spot for us to settle down. After that, we all ran different direction ordering food we want to try. So hungry !

We had popiah which was really good. The fillings are very nice and juicy but not wet. I hate wet popiahs. The only thing which I find interesting is thatIpohspread the sweet and spicy sauce all over the top of the popiah (interesting).

I ordered the Chee Cheung Fun and everyone agreed that it was fantastic. The texture is super smooth and has a really nice chewy consistency. The sauce was a bit sweet but it seems to compliment the rice noodle quite well.

We had it together with some Yong Tau Foo, which was also sold by the same stall. The way they make the beancurd skin yong tau foo was really interesting to me. Most of the time in KL, the skin wrap the meat fully. I find that this method actually taste better. Perhaps it is because some of the exposed meat is also fried which makes it more aromatic.

I couldn’t resist ordering the Fried Kueh Teow. It was quite good. But, the penang duck egg was better.

On top of what I’ve mentioned above, we also had the 3 bowls of ipoh hor fun (soup noodle –  was really really yummy too) and Chicken Rice between the 5 of us !!! It was really a great start to our ipoh food journey…

I can’t wait to try other food in 3 days that we will be staying in Ipoh.

Australia, Blue Cow, butcher shop, Cafe, dinner, plaza damas hartamas, Pork, pork chop

Hub and I was not very hungry, so we decided to take our time driving around and choosing random restaurant instead of heading straight to our regular haunt.

So, that’s how we ended up finding the Blue Cow café in plaza damas, hartamas. When we walk in, it felt like I was back in Melbourne’s butcher shop. Huge varieties of meats are stack neatly behind clear glassed refrigerated cabinets. I fell in love even before I sat down to dine.

Since it was our first time there, we decided to try their Meat Platter. They have a few platter sizes which you can choose from and take note that their portions are quite generous.

We decided to try the medium platter, with the choice of 1 sausage, 1 burger patty, 1 kebab (for the sausage, patty and kebab, you can choose between beef, pork, lamb or chicken), 1 pork chop and some bacon, serve with mustard, mint sauce (if you choose lamb) and apple sauce. The platter comes with 2 sides. We chose coleslaw and chips.

*** YES – they serve pork even tough the cafe is call blue cow.

The sausage was nice, but a tad bit salty for me. LOVE the burger patty. (we had the lamb). I didn’t like the kebab but hub liked it. The bacon was normal. The pork chop was yummy !! I like that it is cook well but yet retains the juiciness of the meat (especially since it’s quite a thick cut). The apple sauce was a little bit disappointing. It’s too undercook in my opinion. I would have prefered if they cook it abit longer, add a dash of honey and maybe add some thyme. (but then, it’s just me. ;p)

Worrying that it might not be enough (hub is a HUGE meat lover), we ordered an additional side of Stir-Fry Roast Pork. I like this dish as the flavour has more punch to it. It’s stir-fried with some garlic and chilli padi. Hub was not really impressed with this as it’s quite common to get this dish in typical Chinese restaurant. The price seems a little steep too for a small bowl if compared to the platter we ordered.

While eating, we note a lot of Aussies dropping in for dinner. They have Aussie burger on their menu !!! oo.. how I miss aussie burger and beetroot. *drool*

Hub even remarked that eating here reminds him of Lygon street in Melbourne.

After we came home, I did some googling and found (with no surprise) that the café is owned by Australian couple. Cool. I foresee hub and myself returning there again for some of their juicy burgers. 🙂

century egg, crab, Fatty Crab, Fish, fried rice, roti bakar, Taman Megah

I know I should be blogging about my Ipoh trip. I’ll do it soon. ;p

But for now, a little mighty crab restaurant which has been around for some time. I would like to bring your attention to Fatty Crab. For those who live around PJ, this restaurant is quite famous. I have even seen groups of people hiring bus to drive to this restaurant from either Penang, Seremban or Johor, just to taste it.

One thing you should note is that this restaurant is ALWAYS crowded. It doesn’t matter if you go on a weekday or weekend. My advice is, be there before 6:30pm !!! OR, you wait… it continues to stay crowded even until 10pm !!! I kid you not.

The first thing I do whenever I go to Fatty crab is to have their century eggs. The yolk is a little gooey and the taste is amazing. Eat it with the pickled ginger… ohhh… I Love it !!! I could easily polish off 2 eggs (3 if no one is looking) by myself. hehehee…

The Famous Crabs of Fatty Crab – the sour and spicy / the steam

Most people who come here order the sour and spicy crab. This is the restaurant’s speciality. Personally, I prefer their steam crab. The meat is always so fresh and sweet. (plus my fingers stay cleaner ;p). But, I LOVE the sour spicy sauce on their Roti Bakar (Toast hainam bread) and the Fried Rice. yuuummmmz. We normally request for extra sauce just for dipping in our bread.

Aside from crab, there also other dishes on the menu. But, not much variety. That night, we ordered the steam fish. The fish texture was a little on the soft side, not my kind of fish. (Not sure what fish that was). I prefer firm meat fishes. ;p But, the soup was really nice. Mom say it’s the teo chew style. nice… Sweet and sourish.

While waiting for your main dishes, you can also snack on fried chicken wings and satay. Unfortunately, we polish those off before I remember my camera. ;p
